Why the address type matters
Fees are charged per virtual byte, not per bitcoin sent. Sending 0.001 BTC and sending 10 BTC cost the same if the transaction is the same size.
What changes the size is the script type and the number of inputs and outputs. Moving from a legacy 1… address to Taproot
cuts a simple payment from 226 vB to 111 vB — the same transfer for roughly half the fee, permanently.
Consolidation is the big one
Sweeping ten small UTXOs into one costs about 690 vB, roughly five times a simple payment. That is why the honest advice is to consolidate when fees are low rather than when you happen to need the coins. At 1 sat/vB (the 25th percentile of the last 90 days) that sweep costs 690 sat; at 3 sat/vB (the 90th) it costs 2,070 sat.
